Pursuant to the 1997 amendments to IDEA, there are explicit requirements of an IEP Team in regards to the amelioration of addressing behavioral problems of students with disabilities.
In this regard, it must first be recognized that a well developed behavioral plan for a student presenting with behavioral problems is derived from an understanding that there is no single cause for problem behaviors.
Following the collection of data on a students areas of problem behavior and the development of a Functional Behavioral Assessment, the students behavioral intervention plan needs to employ a positive behavioral approach to ameliorating problem behaviors. A well constructed Behavioral Intervention Plan should engage in positive strategies, program or curriculum modifications, and supplementary aids and supports as needed.
